Christian Melanie Lee

Grammy-award winning neo-soul/hip-hop queen Erykah Badu will be visiting the country as part of her Badu vs Everythang Tour 2017 A.D. Live in Manila. I've been listening to her songs ever since her debut album, Baduizm released in 1997.

For those who are curious about her, here are 10 things you should know about Erykah Badu.

1. In 2008, she became the face of fashion designer Tom Ford White Patchouli fragrance.

2. She was named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People by People Magazine in 1998.

3. During the span of her music career, Badu had released five studio albums, one live album, one compilation album, one mixtape, 31 singles, and 20 music videos.

4. She received Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for On & On and Best R&B Album for Baduizm at 1998 Grammy Awards.

5. She's a vegan since 2006.

6. She changed her birth name Erica to Erykah. She believes that the former is her "slave" name. The term 'kah' from 'Erykah' signifies the inner self, which, when translated from Arabic, means 'can do no wrong'. Meanwhile, Badu is also an African name for the 10th born child used for the Ashanti people in Ghana.

7. She has 3 children; a son named Seven Sirius from her previous relationship with Outkast's André 3000; Puma Sabti Curry (the father is West Coast rapper The D.O.C.) and Mars Merkaba Thedford to her boyfriend of five years, rapper Jay Electronica.

8. She won 16 awards from 59 nominations from MTV Music Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, Grammy Awards, and American Music Awards.

9. Badu established a charity organization, Beautiful Love Incorporated Non Profit Development (B.L.I.N.D.). They provide community-driven development for inner-city youth through music, dance, theater and visual arts.

10. With her efforts for the said charitable works, she received the Key to the City of Dallas.
