An enchanted evening with Jason Mraz and Raining Jane in Manila

I know a lot of you missed out to watch Jason Mraz and Raining Jane last week. Me and Ian didn't see them performed due to our hectic workload.

We're sharing with you April De Guzman's concert experience during Mraz's YES tour:

"It takes a thought to make a word, and it takes some words to make an action.." and it takes a mirophone and some musical instruments to deliver such powerful messages through the form of music and banters by the genius man that is Jason Mraz.

It was a night full of positivity and heartfelt realization as Jason Mraz takes the Philippine stage for the fourth time, this time with the equally talented all-girl band, Raining Jane last November 27, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

What's not to like about the man, anyway? You may be living under a rock if you have not heard of his hits "The Remedy", "You and I Both", "I'm Yours" and "I Won't Give Up" at least once in you life making you  like the man by default. No need for extravagant stage designs and effects, the talent is more than enough.

The Raining Jane started the almost three hours of pure bliss with songs,  "The Opposite of Blue" and "From Me To You". This band composing of Mai Bloomfield, Becky Gebhardt, Chaska Potter and Mona Tavakoli, they have  been playing music, writing and touring together for over a decade and it was evident on the musical chemistry that they had on stage. They are such a joy to watch and it is refreshing to hear an all-girl band on the eclectic rock-folk genre. They were gushing about the warm welcome of the Filipino making this trip one of their favourites. Also, later on it was revealed that they co-wrote Jason Mraz's  A Beautiful Mess And it is downright impressive.

Then their time is up (but not really because they have played with Jason all throughout the show giving it a more personal vibe given that they usually jam on their backyards and create music together even back home) and in great pleasure they have introduced the main man, Jason Mraz to the ever enthusiastic fans. He opened the set with Life Is Wonderful which somehow has given the fans an idea on what to expect with the whole show. It became a reminder of how life is wonderful to be wasted on worrying about things and the things that we do not have any control. The album Yes which is also the title of the headlining tour is mainly about spreading positivity and basically saying Yes to Life. Admittedly, though, he's said that it was hard to stay positive especially these days with all the nasty and bad stuff that is happening everywhere. But like somebody who is on the verge of a writer's block, one should not stop. Write and write something until something fruitful comes out. One has to start on something, and eventually everything will fall in its respective places.

Below is the setlist for the night. To be honest, one will barely notice the number of songs that he did  (Has it really been that lot?) because through his funny antics and banters ranging from funny, crazy up to the inspiring ones, he has definitely delivered and made sure that everyone would have a real good time.

Life Is Wonderful
Everywhere
Sweet Dreams/The Dynamo of Volition medleyThings
Lucky
I Take The Music
Hello, You Beautiful Thing
Make It Mine
Quiet
A Beautiful Mess
3 Things
Back To The Earth
Mr. Curiosity
Bottom of the Sea
Love Someone
Song For A Geek
Only Human
Long Drive
The Remedy (acoustic)
Browntown
93 Million Miles
Shine
I'm Yours

Encore:
I Won't Give Up
It's So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday

Offering the crowd not only his pure talent and awesome music but throughout the show, he has also made it known the causes that he supports and why people should follow his example (though he does not directly state it). One thing would be that part where he has showed and simultaneously played a video of their recent trip to the Antartica where the effects of global warming is evident, along with the impressive wildlife that is out there. All of this while performing Bottom of the Sea live and in-synched live on stage which is quite impressive and has served as an eye-opener to everyone. He has also mentioned that most of the crew on this trip are Filipino and that has elicited a loud cheer from the crowd.

There was also a point where he has acknowledged the group of local supporters/fan club that is present who has organized a tree-planting activity on his behalf also adding that farming and the trees will serve as our "legacy to the future generations".

Prior to the end, he has changed thr lyrics of the last song to "It's so hard to say goodbye to the Philippines.." and said, "Kitakits! Salamat po!" giving the crowd angreat satisfaction and more things to look forward.

All in all, seeing Jason Mraz and the Raining Jane live is a wonderful experience that one should have at least once in his/her lifetime. Not only will he satisfy your musical cravings with his pure talent but he will enlighten you and remind you to choose to be happy no matter what, to choose to lead the good life and continue to bless others through your existence.

And for once, you will never regret saying YES.

Can't get enough of Jason and Raining Jane? The album Yes is now available on iTunes and can also be streamed on Spotify.

Featured online merch store: Fandom Capital

We've been known for our collection of band merch shirts. And for this month, we're featuring Fandom Capital.

It was owned by Henri Marie Villegas. Ayan knew her after Anberlin concert. When she found out that she has an online merch store, this blog's co-founder bought Chvrches' shirt, just in time for their concert. She was satisfied over the turnout of purchasing fab shirts.

Glow in the dark Chvrches-inspired shirt #ftw.

Get to know more about Henri and Fandom Capital:

Can you share us about on how Fandom Capital started?

Fandom Capital is a personal side project. My parents started a printing & corporate giveaway business a couple of years back, and from time to time I'd make designs for some of the items they offer and sell them on their facebook page. There were times when I would make a design for them to print and tell them that we could sell them, but really I just wanted that on a shirt for myself. (haha) Early this year my parents encouraged me to set up Fandom Capital as my own business and outlet for my love affair with design and music. We did a soft launch back in August with five shirt designs in time for Bazooka Rocks. They never got printed on shirts, which is okay, because it turned out to be a lesson in marketing. (lol!) Now we regularly produce new designs and some of them get shipped to places I haven't even been to, like Cebu and Iloilo.

Ayan (far right) wore Chvrches' shirt from Fandom Capital.

What makes you inspired to make awesome shirts and its designs?

I want to fill my closet with band shirts! Before I got this into music, I was really into fashion. And I always look to musicians (and people related to musicians) for style inspiration. It's pretty cool how a simple band shirt can make someone look so stylish and seem so effortless. Like Kate Moss. That's how I got into making shirt designs. Most of the designs I make are based on the songs that I listen to and the posters I see on the internet.

With a lot of band merch shirts online shops out there, what makes Fandom Capital unique?

I'm more into typography than illustration, so if people want some artsy stylized prints of lyrics on their shirts (or bags, or coffee mugs), we're a good place to go to. I think what Fandom Capital has are pieces that I personally would like to wear or use. We offer more than just shirts, and we'll be having even more options come 2015.

Any plans for expand your merch business?

Ship globally! When I was still selling merch under my parents' business, we got orders from overseas. But we hand to turn them down because we didn't know how to send it to them without the shipping fee costing more than twice the item they wanted to get. Now that we've figured that out, I'm hoping we get the chance to test it next year. We're also working on making the shopping experience more convenient for people, and maybe produce even more designs to cover even morefandoms. Fandom Capital wasn't really meant to focus on just music fans. I'm obsessed with a lot of TV shows, books, and movies, and I'd want to wear merch based on those, and sell them too.

Check her online store at Facebook, follow them on Instagram and Twitter.

Unforgettable up close and personal with Chvrches in Manila

Last August, I had a conversation with co-founder Ian on the upcoming tour of Scottish synthpop band, Chvrches in the country. At that time, I started to get hooked over Lauren's beautiful voice on Spotify.(Thanks Ian for the recommendation! :D ).

We're supposed to watch the concert but I was ecstatic to learn that time that they will visit Manila for the first time a day after my birthday.

A week before the big day when my friend offered me her extra pass for the meet and greet which she won in an online contest conducted by Vybe Productions. Delighted to meet them up close and personal, and I can't even imagine myself on how to tell them that I really like all of their songs.

11.26.14, 4:30 pm, Samsung Hall, SM Aura

With a horrible traffic along Forbes on my way to the venue, I thought I'm late for the meet and greet sesh. Minutes after I arrived at Samsung Hall, we were told that to get ready to meet Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty, and Iain Cook.

At first, my hands are shaking while I dolled up wearing customized Chvrches shirt from Fandom Capital. When it's my turn to meet them, I was totally speechless when Martin had a lil chat with me while he signed my notebook and my friend's vinyl sleeve (I asked my friend to carry my tix and signed by them). I was overwhelmed when they noticed my shirt. So adorbs when they told me the shirt's awesome. (It's glow in the dark, FYI.)

Two hours of waiting and we're finally got in. When the door for the VIP section opened, me, Henri and my new found friends Janine, Jio, Peny hurried ourselves going towards the stage. DJ Joey Santos opened up the stage, along with Brisom (my new favorite band!) and Autotelic.

DJ Joey Santos with Lux Leigh

Brisom's in the house!

Autotelic

I was yelling so loud when Chvrches came up on stage and sang "We Sink". Luckily, I had a great spot near the stage and enjoyed every moment listening to their songs. The concergoers went wild as they performed Lies, Gun, Night Sky, The Mother We Share, Dead Air and By The Throat. The funniest thing that night when a guy besides me almost hug me when he saw Lauren on stage. :D

Amused over how Lauren played the microphone, Martin strut his stuff while belting out Under The Tide and Iain made the jampacked crowd in awe as we sang all the songs on the setlist.

Best night of my life! Met Chvrches and my first meet and greet. :)

A night to remember. Post birthday gift to myself...I can't stop staring all the photos that I took that night will always be one of the best concert I've been to this year. Thank you to my friend, Henri Villegas for giving me the spare pass for the Meet and Greet. Kudos to Vybe Production for bringing Chvrches in the country.

Above is my friends' post on IG. She got a copy of the setlist that night. So lucky!

Onto the next concert adventure soon!
