Shawn Mendes mesmerized his Filipino fans

The most awaited concert of the Canadian pop singer-songwriter, Shawn Mendes was held last March 18, 2017 at Mall of Asia Arena.

As early as 10AM, fans already line up and waiting outside the Arena hoping to get a glimpse of Shawn Mendes before show started.

Exactly 8PM when the entire Arena came to uneasy silence – the lights were turned down and the fans became crazier and wilder. The moment Shawn stepped out on stage with his guitar slung nonchalantly across his back, the fans went wild and the show began with a bang with one of his popular songs “Something Big”.

The fans was immediately singing along and deliriously screaming when Shawn performed his smash hit single “Treat You Better”. As the show continued to unfold, Shawn serenaded his fans with his mash-up songs” I Don’t Even Know Your Name”, “Aftertaste” and “Kid In Love”.

We were beyond stoked after hearing these words from Shawn, “I’ve never been to the Philippines and it is a world away from me. But to hear you sing to my every song is just amazing. I’m so happy that my songs have connected with so many people on many different ways”.

Everyone screamed and sang along with Shawn when he performed “Ruin”. To be honest, I‘ve never heard a crowd as loud as this one. I can also say that he was overwhelmed by the crowd’s reaction as he said “You guys are an absolutely wonderful crowd”.

Other notable tracks performed were “Three Empty Words””Patience””Don’t Be A Fool” and he also performed his latest single “Mercy” it was great and a little bit emotional hearing his golden voice singing my favorite song of him.

Shawn was all smiles throughout the entire concert. And impressed his fans with his piano skills while playing “Life Of The Party” and closing the night with one of his popular songs “Stitches” that been performed with a piano followed by a guitar. As the song ended, Shawn waved his hand before exiting the stage saying “Thank you! I’ll come back soon”.

Lights were dimmed but the crowd unanimously chanted for “We want more, we want more”.

Unfortunately, the show has no encore. But surely, each and every person in the crowd was delighted, content and went home with a smile on their faces.

Shawn Mendes’ concert can be regarded as one of those “a night to remember” show that I attended.
Kudos to all the people involved behind the show most especially to PLDT Home for this great opportunity.

Sybil, Kalapana, El DeBarge for Throwback Thursday on April 27 at Araneta Coliseum

An interesting mix of soft rock and R&B classics shall take music fans on a nostalgic trip back to the ‘80s as three noted foreign acts get together in a retro concert in April that will showcase some of the era’s best in popular music.

For the first time ever, singer-songwriter El DeBarge, disco diva and vocalist Sybil and band Kalapana from Hawaii will appear on  the same stage on April 27 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City to perform their greatest hits that have endeared to millions of Filipinos.

Ovation Productions is presenting the three foreign artists together in what is dubbed “Throwback Thursday” as it’s summer offering. Also featured is popular Pinoy band Passage.

Known for his signature falsetto, El DeBarge was the focal point and lead singer of the American family group DeBarge from the early to mid-‘80s.  The group’s hits include “Time Will Reveal, “Stay With Me,” “All This Love”, “Rhythm of the Night”, “Starlight Express”, and “Who’s Holding Donna Now”, among others.

After leaving the group in 1985, he launched his solo career the following year with a self-titled debut album that contained the Number Three hit, “Who’s Johnny?,” which was featured in the film, “Short Circuit.”

Sybil Anita Lynch, known simply to music fans as Sybil, on the other hand, attained success as an R&B pop singer and songwriter during the mid-80s until the mid-90s.

Recognized as an excellent vocalist and one of the finest among disco divas, the American artist from New Jersey began recording in 1986 with the release of her debut single, “Falling in Love,” which reached the Top 30 on the R&B and Dance charts, and which opened the door to her successful career through the release of her debut album, “Let Yourself Go.” a year later.

She scored huge crossover hits in the Philippines with her song “Make It Easy On Me” and her cover versions of Dionne Warwick’s “Don’t Make Me Over” in 1989 and “Walk On By” in 1990.

She attained her most successful hit in the United Kingdom with a cover of |The Love I Lost,” which peaked at No.3, while its follow up, “When I’m Good and Ready,” peaked at No. 5.

In 1997, Sybil released her greatest hits album, followed later that year by her last album to-date, “Still A Friend.”

The contemporary Hawaiian group, Kalapana, which is now on its 44th year in the music and entertainment industry,  gained fame for its pop and soft rock music that have made its songs, such as “Night Bird”, “Naturally” and “The Hurt,” enduring island classics.

Kalapana  made a successful breakthrough in the international touring circuit when it performed with the LA-based fusion band Hiroshima, played at the grand opening of Hard Rock CafĂ© in Honolulu and performed in two-sold out shows in the Philippines with an attendance of 10,000 each night.

It also did extensive tours in Japan, US West Coast, Tahiti, Samoa, Guam, Saipan and other Pacific islands.

Its successful tour in Japan with Michael Paulo of Al Jarreau’s band and Tris Imboden (drummer for Chicago)  boosted Kalapana’s popularity in that country, where it has one of its largest fan bases since the 1970s,  and landed it a five-album deal with Pony Canyon Records.

In 2011, Kalapana received the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts Achievement Award.  \The recipients were Malani Bilyyeu, Mackey Feary (posthumously, John (DJ) Pratt, Kirk Thompson, Alvin Fejarang, Michael Paulo, Randy Aloya, Gaylord Holomalia and Kenji Sano.

Kalapana was last seen in the Philippines in 2012 when it had a three-night, three-city concert tour with folk rock band America produced by Ovation Productions. -- #

Former 6cyclemind frontman Ney Dimaculangan launched an album, Napapanahon with his new band

Former Award winning 6cyclemind frontman, Ney Dimaculangan, is back with his new band and an album consisted of 10 all Tagalog songs. It was launched last Feb 28,2017 at Historia Bar Boutique and Restaurant.

Dimaculangan and bass guitar player Louie Lopez were bandmates way back in 1997 even before 6cyclemind was formed and they used to play in Tarlac City. While Patch Sanchez, guitarist, was a session player for Ney when he became a solo artist. Arnee Escobedo, guitarist and back up vocals, has his own band early 2000; Ney considers him as a brother since their former bands were like batchmates in the music scene. When Arnee's band got disbanded, Ney asked him to join him with his new band. And lastly, Kervi Capin, drummer and newest member of the band who just joined last year. Ney and Kervi met through Ney's session drummer Jasper Grutas.

Louie Lopez - Bass Guitar

Arnee Escobedo - Guitars

Patch Sanchez - Guitars

Kervi Capin - Drums

It was a mutual decision for the band members to use "Ney" as their band's name since Ney already established his career in the music industry as a frontman for his former band 6cyclemind. Most of the songs were from Ney's archives. The oldest was written back in 2005.

When asked how long did it take for them to come up with this album, "4 years or more pa. Hindi ako gumawa ng kanta para irelease agad if we think it's the right time and if we think na maganda na yung kanta for us tsaka natin irelease, kaya medyo relaxed ung paggawa nung album," Dimaculangan explained.

It was a collaborative effort from the band to come up with the 10 songs on their album. Ney said, "Ang importante kasi ung ingredients namin. Which is all of us collaboratively pag pinatunog na namin ung kanta is ung takbo nya iisa ung idea namin...free flowing ung idea"

"Ung music dapat may freedom; each individual has its own interpretation. Nakakatuwa lang kung yung interpretation nila is parang ung iniisip mo rin for my songs."

Ney was asked if they have any particular direction that they want to take or style when it comes to their music. Ney considers their music as alternative and "Tunog 90s".

Arnee said "Lahat tayo dumadaan ng ups & downs sa buhay." "Napapanahon" was the name of their album. Ney also added that they want their listeners to have an awareness that they are not the only one who's going through at something and hopefully through their songs they can uplift someone.

For their debut single, Habag which is now available on digital channels; fans can expect an upcoming music video. "Pinag-iisipan na namin ung magiging music video. we don't want it na sobrang komplikado gusto namin ung maririnig pa rin nila ung kanta, nakafocus pa rin sila sa kanta at the same time nageenjoy din sila sa video."

Oasis' Liam Gallagher set to perform live in Manila on August 14 at MOA Arena

90s kids, rejoice! If you're listening to Oasis, frontman Liam Gallagher set to perform in Manila on August 14, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Liam was voted the greatest frontman of all time in a 2010 reader poll by Q magazine.

Many bands and artists have cited Oasis as an influence or inspiration, including the Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Maroon 5, and Coldplay, among others.

Oasis is a five-piece band from Manchester, England led by Liam and Noel Gallagher, two brothers from public housing, who became the defining musical act for a generation. Noel’s proudly British lyrics; choruses that could make your throat clench and your heart threaten to burst; Liam’s sneering vocals and pissed-off posture; the cocktail of ego, camaraderie, and one-upmanship that made Oasis as entertaining and volatile offstage as on.

The band’s third album, “Be Here Now” in 1997 set a new record as the fastest selling album in UK Chart history. “What's the Story Morning Glory” was even more successful, becoming the third-best selling album in British history.

Liam Gallagher was praised for his vocal contributions to Oasis, and his presence made the band a popular live act. However, his attitude also won him much attention from the British press who often ran stories concerning his alleged behaviour. Liam’s erratic behaviour, distinctive singing style, and abrasive attitude have been the subject of commentary in the press; he remains one of the most recognisable figures in modern British music.

Liam Gallagher’s voice has been compared to John Lennon’s. He would sarcastically claim to be Lennon re-incarnated, despite being born eight years prior to Lennon's death. He has stated he has no clear influence other than John Lennon and "music" itself, and has been known to incorporate many different forms, such as punk, indie and new wave, and recently has explored elements of jazz with Beady Eye, his band after Oasis broke up.

Songs such as "Live Forever", "Lyla", "Don't Go Away", "Slide Away" and "Champagne Supernova are cited as examples of Liam’s best work. He would sing with the microphone coming in the closest contact with him between his upper lip and nose, rather than directly in front of the mouth as is the case with most singers. Gallagher once revealed that the reason he sings with his arms behind his back is because it allows him to project more power through his voice.

Liam Gallagher performs at the MOA Arena on August 14 produced by Ovation Productions. Tickets on sale starting February 18, 2017 through www.smtickets.com and regular SM Tickets outlets at P8700, 7700, 5700, 4700, 3700, 1700.
