Rockin' All Out At Rakrakan Festival 2018

It's been a while since that I went to a big venue for a rock gig. For me that was on regular routine reviewing and finding news about tech, Rakrakan Festival 2018 last weekend was the perfect venue and timing for me to let loose and rockin' all out.

120 bands and artists and six stages, I never saw that massive set-up here as it was proper to do it with how massive the rock, indie and alternative scene locally.

Imagine like a whirlwind inside a moshpit, me and the two designated photographers who had these shots were on back-and-forth action aside from the side events that you can check inside the venue. On it's sixth offering since 2013, Rakrakan was definitely gone bigger. One example was the feast of merch brands there.

Move Stage was the nearest in the VIP entrance so Gracenote was the first act that we seen at the evening. It was also worth time that we have seen the likes of Moonstar 88, Cebu-based Drive Me To Juliet, the Original Payaso Music (OPM) of Tanya Markova, Hale, Ben and Ben and one of the first timers, the returning Orange and Lemons. Guitarist/vocalist Clem Castro was more than happy to grant a request of their song which used for a shampoo TVC. We really felt that he enjoyed their set.

In Indie Stage, we were able to catch up with some of the crowd drawers like Brisom, IV of Spades and that dancy tunes from 6-piece band Autotelic. There were some slight changes in the sked on that stage but it did not bother for most of the people who chose to stay there.

Tropa Center Stage was more on the already-known acts like Barbie Almalbis, Loonie, Freestyle, Side A and Itchyworms which their guitarist/vocals Jugs Jugueta said Hi to Side A drummer Ernie Severino and revealed that he was one of the idols of their drummer, Jazz. That stage was also the place of one of the headliners, Ely Buendia

Groove Stage was the haven for those who want to have some chill and be steady to reggae and it's connected genres. From it's plan, finally we were able to catch Basti Artadi and the rest of Plan of Fools with their unique musicality. Noteworthy to mention there were On The Spot, former The Voice PH finalist Kokoi Baldo and his band Juan Gapang and another crowd-favorite Brownman Revival.

Slam Stage was the farthest from the VIP entrance but it was worth the walk and dash to watch the likes of Skychurch and Valley of Chrome.

Another loud place, the Mosh Stage with Arci Munoz and the rest of Philia, Dicta License, Franco with some performances from their newly-released album, Saydie, Wilabaliw, Siakol (which was the last act for us for the festival) and that pyro-infused intro and rockin' set from Slapshock

The sound quality in all stages was very good as well as on the tight security that we felt to made sure that everyone was safe. More than half a day of enjoyment especially for those who love the local scene. Looking forward for more of Rakrakan Festival next year.

Breakthrough singer Moira will join Boyce Avenue for a concert on June 1

THE “BOYCE” ARE COMING BACK. One of the biggest independent bands in the world – BOYCE AVENUE, are coming to Manila for a concert on June 1st at the Araneta Coliseum, together with the most streamed local artist now in the Philippines, MOIRA.

Boyce Avenue is comprised of the three Manzano brothers – Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Fabian (guitar, vocals) and Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals). The Florida-based band was formed in 2004, and in 2007 they started posting videos on YouTube sharing not only their original songs, but also their distinctive acoustic covers with the world. The videos resonated instantly and to date the band's YouTube channel has amassed over 3.7 BILLION Views and over 10.6 MILLION Subscribers. On YouTube, the band is ranked above such artists as Justin Timberlake. Drake, Miley Cyrus, Sia, and Imagine Dragons. The brothers have forged a lasting and passionate digital fan base on other platforms as well, with over 3 MILLION Facebook likes and a half million Twitter followers.

The band has also sold in excess of 10 Million songs and 1 Billion streams, and has had the privilege of touring the world several times, selling more than 600,000 tickets in over 30 countries, including most recently, a sold-out show at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London, on November 2017.

Joining them on this concert is MOIRA, one of today’s favorites and one of the breakout stars of 2017 after winning the Himig Handog 2017 with her song “Titibo-Tibo”. She has massively increased her popularity and it was her song “Malaya” - theme song from the movie “Camp Sawi” that made her the “movie soundtrack queen of this generation”. Hopeless romantics and even the broken-hearted can’t get enough of her hugot renditions of “Torete” and “Sundo”, as well as her other songs such as “Tagpuan”, Huling Gabi”, “Kita Na Kita” and “Saglit”, among others. Moira’s first two-night concert at the KIA Theater over the weekend sold out in just a few days.

BOYCE AVENUE WITH MOIRA is organized by Wilbros Live. Tickets go on-sale on Wednesday, February 28 via or call 911-5555 for more information.

Collabro set to appear in several ABS-CBN shows before their February 26 concert in Manila

Fresh from starring in 'Britain's Got Talent - The Big Celebration' in Liverpool, England at the weekend, musical theatre group Collabro have jetted in for an Asian Tour that will see them perform for the first time here in the Philippines at Resorts World Manila on February 26.

The hugely-popular four-piece act comprising singers Jamie Lambert, Michael Auger, Matt Pagan and Thomas Redgrave will launch their Asian shows with two concerts in Japan before arriving in the Philippines' capital for the first time.

As well as performing for their army of "Collaborators" in Manila, the four British singers are lined up to make several TV appearances on popular ABS-CBN productions 'ASAP', 'Showtime' and 'Umagang Kay Ganda' to showcase the vocals, style and charisma that have helped win millions of fans around the world.

Four years ago this week, the boys stepped in front of TV's 'Britain's Got Talent' judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon for an audition that blew away the judges and resulted in a standing ovation from the entire theatre.

Today that audition of the song "Stars" from "Les Miserables" is as popular as ever with over 40 million views on YouTube alone. Legendary TV and music mogul Cowell described it as: "… an absolutely brilliant audition - brilliant" and the British public agreed voting Collabro as the show's winning act for 2014.

"We are all looking forward to working with Collabro on making their first ever show in the Philippines a great success," said a spokesman for event producers and promoters Spicy Lemon.

"As well as songs from all three of their albums – including the show-stopping "Stars" – the boys will dip into the catalogue of some of the biggest musical theatre shows of all time and no doubt have a few other surprises for their Manila fans.”

Remaining tickets for the show at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World are on sale online from or from the Box Office at Resorts World. For more information, contact Spicy Lemon on +63 995 9276776.

Surreal night with Incubus | 8 Tour in Manila

Three years ago, I'd anticipated seeing Brandon Boyd and the rest of the members of Incubus performed for the first time during their Trust Fall tour held at Mall of Asia Arena. During that time, I'm establishing this blog. Got Mikey Einziger's guitar pick and enjoyed my time in the moshpit.

Last night, it's their fifth time for the Manila leg of 8 Tour. I can't imagine that they're back to see their Filipino fans once again. They performed 22 songs from their previous up to their current album, 8.

From Anna Molly to Glitterbomb, the two-hour concert gave me the nostalgic, surreal feel that everyone who watched it sang every single song that the band played on stage. It was lit....jampacked Araneta Coliseum!

Boyd's charisma on stage that makes everyone at Araneta Coliseum swooned over him. I stayed the entire night at the moshpit and noticed that even men ecstatic to see him. Ageless but energetic vibe that Incubus brings us last night.

You complete my night, Incubus!

Special thanks to Ovation Production for the opportunity.

Sandwich's 20th anniversary concert, Under The Glow of the Satellite on April 13

When Sandwich got together in 1998 the plan was that there was no plan. The group was simply a bunch of like-minded music fans who wanted to make songs and play them live. They were already in other bands, and working on radio and in record labels (well except for Marc who was in school). This was just an excuse to make other kinds of music with other people, a fun thing to do on the side. They wrote a few songs because they thought that was cool (and also, they couldn’t cover for shit so that worked out). And to be able to play live they got a monthly Sunday prod at Mayric’s (because nobody wanted that night). The record label released the first album on a lark. The album’s kick off single took off and the rest as they say, is history.

Since then the band has released eight albums. A generation of Pinoy music fans have grown up on “Butterfly Carnival” and “Sugod”. They’ve picked up every award a rock band can possibly have in Manila. They’ve played the width and breadth of the Philippines. They’ve also played in bars and festivals in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, London, New York, and LA including The Hollywood Bowl. You could say they’ve come a long way from that high school classroom in Ateneo where they almost didn’t play their first gig because of an irate Math teacher. Sandwich is turning 20 this year.

To celebrate, they will be holding UNDER THE GLOW OF THE SATELLITE, an anniversary concert on April 13 at the Metrotent Convention Center, Metrowalk Commercial Complex. The band is also putting out a limited 7” vinyl with two new songs - “Time Lapse” and “Parang Walang Nangyari”. Are they done? Hell no. Not when it’s getting easier to be themselves and to pluck ideas out of their heads and get them down on tape. There’s still so much fun to be had. The world is moving forward, the future is exciting and unexpected, and there’s always more music to hear and make and play. Those old punks are still in there, carrying their heroes with them as they go in search for new musical adventures together.

The Romantic Anthems of Lance Edward

After the "tease" that were the viral car wash boy photos, this time Lance Edward now surprises with romantic anthems. These songs are guaranteed to "touch" the collective hearts of all this season of love and beyond.

"Kung Ako Na Lang Sana," a revival of the Bituin Escalante emotional, musical plea serves as Lance's first song. The reason for this choice, he shares, "Most people can relate to the story and meaning of the song. I sang it in a show recently and many opined na ramdam nila, at galing talaga sa puso ko yung pagkanta kaya tumagos sa mga puso nila."
He carries on, "I guess, many of us have experienced that emotional state, yung may mahal kang di niya alam na mahal mo siya and you see her with someone who does not deserve her kaya yung ang wish mo, na kung ako na lang sana."
"There is no perfect life," Edward says. "We can't get anything that we want kaya minsan sa kanta ko na lang, or sa kanta na lang natin dinadaan."
Star Music releases his first single plus other ditties such as Meat Loaf's mammoth hit "I’d Do Anything For Love" and "I Want It That Way," the iconic Back Street Boys top of the charts song, in Spotify, Itunes, Spinnr and other digital music platforms.
Why must people support your songs? Lance answers with a smile, "I hope and pray that people support it because singing is my passion. With these songs, people can feel how truthful I am, every note and every line, I am emotionally committed in interpreting them. I want people to experience and embrace the stories in these anthems. As I sing and perform them eventually, they will know that Lance Edward sings from his heart."
Shows in leading metro and mega Manila malls and in regional entertainment centers as well are being planned. The first show is slated on February 18, in Wilcon City Center, located in Visayas Avenue.
Lance Edward, the romantic crooner concludes, "Many thanks to all of you who are now  part of this dream coming true. Please support my songsThank for the love. Always be healthy and may God bless us all in this incredible journey we call as life. I love you all."
