VIXX release their 4th mini-album ‘Shangri-La’

VIXX is praised as a “concept idol group” for the edgy ideas presented in all their albums. Their fourth mini-album ‘Shangri-La’, the band’s interpretation of “Oriental fantasy”, was released on May 15th.

The original title in Korean (Do Won Kyung) means "the peach blossom land" –an ethereal utopia isolated from the outside world just like Shangri-La. VIXX presents the image of Shangri-La with their music, visual design, performance and music video, creating a picturesque atmosphere of beauty and mystery.

VIXX’s concept photos have been used as elements in an Oriental painting. In celebration of the band’s 5th anniversary, the album is designed based on the concept of anniversary. The members’ birth flowers and birthstones have been incorporated into the album design to create an Oriental look, taking the whole album to another level. Members can be seen dressed in suits with an Oriental twist, revealing surreal and flamboyant visual effects.

Following ‘Fantasy’ and ‘The Closer’, title track ‘Shangri-La’ is the another collaboration between VIXX and Devine-Channel, a much sought after production team both at home and abroad. In addition, the band reunited with internationally renowned choreographers Keone & Mari, who previously presented a unique and powerful choreography in ‘Fantasy’. This time choreographer Yu Jung Wan was invited to join the team; by incorporating fans into the dance, a strong Oriental atmosphere has been successfully created.

Ready to embody the concept of Oriental fantasy, VIXX worked with their dream team again and created exciting sparks together, making the album a highly anticipated release. Costumes with Oriental elements and poetic Korean lyrics have created a dreamy and mysterious image. In the teaser trailer of their latest music video, a fantastical world view has been revealed, making it even more anticipated.

A combination of title track and other sophisticatedly-arranged songs, the tracklist includes collaborations with many top-selling Korean and international artists. ‘INTO THE VOID’ is a future bass song filled with darkness, a style which only VIXX can perfectly interpret. ‘Black Out’ is an upbeat deep house song accented with heavy bass, highlighting the fashionable side of VIXX. RAVI is involved in the music and lyric writing of ‘1,2,3,4,5’, an R&B song with rich emotion. ‘To Us’ is a synth modern rock song featuring ballad-style lyrics.

To celebrate its 5th anniversary, VIXX revealed an epic return plan including an album release, a concert and an exhibition. The ‘VIXX LIVE FANTASIA DAYDREAM’ concert was held in Jamsil Indoor Stadium from May 12th to the 14th. Another show will be played on June 11th at Busan KBS Hall. As a witness of the band’s major events in the past 5 years, exhibition ‘VIXX 0524’ will kick off at Ara Art Centre on May 24th, the band’s debut anniversary, and end on June 4th.

How to be a KPop fangirl

A lot of my friends are into KDrama. They're hooked over Goblin actor Gong Yoo, Descendants of the Sun's Song Joong Ki, among others. In my case, I'm a KPop fangirl.

I started out as a KPop fan in 2003 when I watched one of BoA's music video or MV, Atlantis Princess on channel V.  During that time, we don't have an access on Internet and also I'm exploring different music genres when I listened to her song.

SM Entertainment's BoA
Fast forward to 2008, my brother's into Girls' Generation (he liked Yoona.) and played one of Super Junior's song while reading stuff online. I was able to enjoy their music through YouTube. I wasn't able to watch two of their SuperShow concerts here in Manila in 2010 and 2013. In April 2015, I had a chance to see them for Best of Best in Manila.

What makes me a KPop fangirl? I learn some Korean phrases such as omo/omo na (Oh My), Hwaiting! (cheer for good luck and encouragement), and spazz (means it's your body’s reaction to something that makes you excited), among others. I always read the latest news about KPop.

Super Junior during Best of Best in Manila 2015

There's one instance that I asked a fellow blogger friend to buy me Super Junior's food merchandise while she's having a vacation in Seoul. My alert tones on my mobile phone are songs from Super Junior. My playlist on Spotify is comprised of Super Junior's songs from their six albums since 2005.

If you're wondering if I'm listening to other KPop groups, I'm also into SHINee, Red Velvet, and f(x). I can't splurge on KPop merchandise and concert tickets because I can enjoy it by listening to their music and watch videos on YouTube. I would rather iponing (saving up in KPop lingo) for emergency funds. Though some of my friends who also drool over KPop groups, it's their choice to see their ultimate bias (means favorite in KPop lingo) by saving up to watch them up close and personal.

Perks from Chvrches' meet and greet

I’ve known several concert fanatics who kept their tickets, and bought concert merch as souvenirs. If they missed out to buy it during the concert, some of them ask their friends overseas to buy a particular merch.

3. Updated what’s happening about their band’s world tour

Some of these fangirling kiddos glued over Twitter updates about their favorite band’s next stop for the concert tour.

I have a friend who recently watched Coldplay. She attended two Coldplay concerts in Singapore, then she went to see them for the third time here in Manila. One of her plans is to watch the last leg of the band’s concert in Paris soon.

4. Finding a way to watch their favorite artist’s concert

Whether it’s a mall tour or concert, they blocked off the day just to take a glimpse of their favorite member of a band. I overheard a fan story just weeks before The 1975 concert two years ago. She skipped school just to buy a ticket, attended their mall shows and concert.

5 useful tips on how to save up budget for your next concert adventure

Fond of watching concerts? Did you try to save up to buy tickets for your favorite band? If you’re into 52-week money challenge, here’s something that you can fulfill your concert junkie dream come true!

I’ve been covering concerts for the last 3 years. I observed that a lot of concertgoers ages 16 years old and above. Some of them lining up several hours before the ticket selling starts. Camping out outside the mall is one of the strategies that I’ve seen posted by fangirls and fanboys, mostly teenagers just to get the best spot for the concert.

Here are some tips for concert junkies out there on how to save it up for the next concert night with your friends.

1. Get your piggy bank now

If you’re a student and love KPop or boybands, save at least 100 to 200 a day for your weekly allowance. Most of the concert tickets range from 3 thousand pesos above, depending on the seat section you preferred. For example, a VIP ticket costs 10 thousand pesos above. I would

2. If you’re a member of a street team, some of them allowed to reserve tickets prior the ticket selling. It’s practical for those who frequently watch concerts. Also, they have time to save money.

3. Join online contest

If you’re lucky enough to join contests, some of the sponsors for a particular concert and local radio stations conducted an online contest. One tip: Be creative for your entry.

I’ve done this when a local telephone company did a Twitter contest for JLo Live in Manila in 2012. If not, better luck next time.

4. Get a credit card

Some of my friends rely on their credit card whenever their favorite singers and bands announce a tour here in our country.

5. Reduce your monthly expenses

There’s one incident that a friend of mine canceled her online subscriptions and lessen splurging nonsense stuff. What she did is to save her daily expenses and accepts social media projects just to see her favorite band.

34 years of pure entertainment with Gary V at The Theatre at Solaire

After the success of his two-night benefit Valentine concert Love In Motion at The Shangri-La at The Fort, and his memorable stint as one of the celebrity jurors of ABS-CBN’s phenomenal celebrity musical competition Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids, Gary Valenciano opens the second quarter of the year with the highly anticipated season finale of Gary V Presents…, set to happen ‪on May 12‬, 13, 19, and 20 at The Theatre At Solaire (‪8:00 p.m.‬).

With stage direction by Paolo Valenciano, whose credits as a director also include the hit concerts of Sharon Cuneta, Sarah Geronimo, Toni Gonzaga, Sponge Cola, and Sam Concepcion to mention a few; and musical direction by Mon Faustino – who is Gary’s musical director for over 28 years; the season finale of Gary V Presents… is the very first major event that marks Gary’s 34thanniversary in show business.

"Finally we have Gary! We have been waiting for Gary to perform at The Theatre at Solaire for a long time and we are very excited about this run," remarked Solaire Entertainment Director Audie Gemora. Gemora used to be managed by concert producer Manila Genesis Entertainment and Management Inc. which is also celebrating the tail end of its 30th year.

Gary V Presents… is conceptualized by Gary and the Manila Genesis team with son Paolo and the main objective to the series is to provide a mainstream platform for Gary’s choice of artists whom he feels deserve a bigger and wider venue to showcase their immense and formidable talents in the different genres that each of them represent – pop, soul, R&B, jazz, world music, and classical among many others.

The maiden run of Gary V Presents… was staged for two nights in November 2015 and the concert franchise series has since spawned three more runs due to insistent public demand: a repeat in December 2015 in Manila and a special run in Dipolog City, and a two-night run performance July 2016 in Quezon City, making the season finale its fifth and grandest staging ever as it is set to dazzle and enthrall fans of all ages.
For this season finale, fans could look forward to the show-stopping production numbers of Gary with The Voice Of The Philippines alumni Mitoy Yonting, Janice Javier, RJ Dela Fuente, and Tim Pavino; Allan Silonga of the all-male vocal group Daddy’s Home and Suklay Diva and online sensation Katrina Valerde of The X-Factor Philippines; classical-pop singer Lara Maigue of Philpop; theater actress and former star of Miss Saigon in London, Carla Guevara-Laforteza; theater actor and R&B singer Jimmy Marquez of the second season of Search For The Star In A Million; indie artist Bullet Dumas of the annual Elements Songwriting Camp; and it-girl, certified hit-maker, and singer-songwriter Kiana Valenciano. As an added treat, Jason and Joshua Zamora – two of the original members of The Manoeuvres and the Addlib Dancers will join the entire gang for the season finale.
It was heartwarming to see audiences cheer for Bullet Dumas whose unique musicality endeared him to the crowd and his co-performers. Most of them were catapulted to mainstream recognition after they became part of different talent competitions on national TV. Gary chose them to be part of the concert on the basis of their individual achievements as solo artists as they are rapidly conquering the fields of recording, live shows and local bar circuits, theater, and television.
“We are calling this run of Gary V Presents… a season finale because the series will feature a different set of artists when it returns in the future,” says Gary. “I would like to continue my advocacy to provide artists with a bigger platform to showcase their music to a wider audience and I’ll be on the look out for a new set of artists. But of course, the original cast of Gary V Presents…will always have a special place in my heart.”
Gary received standing ovations for this concert and stunned the public with his amazing dancing skills and vocal gymnastics which has continued to prove that he indeed is one of the greatest music performers in Philippine entertainment history and is now being called the King Of OPM.

An advocate of various causes despite his medical challenges, Gary is definitely a living miracle despite 39 years of having Type 1 diabetes. The concert series is for the benefit of the diabetes and scholarship programs of the Shining Light Foundation.
Soon after the season finale of Gary V Presents…, Gary will gear up for his very first North American concert tour this 2017 and together with special guest Katrina Velarde, he is set to perform in M Resort, Las Vegas ‪on May 27; in Pechanga Resort And Casino ‪on June 3‬ with special guest Kiana Valenciano and Katrina Velarde; and in Pasadena Civic Auditorium ‪on June 10‬ with special guests Katrina Velarde, Sam Concepcion, and Kiana Valenciano. On June 12 he will celebration the Philippine Independence Day in Salt Lake City, Utah.
