To kick off this year’s events, Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPop), in partnership with Smart, is headed to Batangas for the first leg of the PhilPop Bootcamp 2019. The four-day workshop for upcoming songwriters will be held on May 27 to 30 at Club Balai Isabel.

PhilPop Bootcamp 2019 is an intensive class led by no less than National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab. It aims to hone the songwriting and performance skills of aspiring music artists. It will be held nationwide, offering scholarship programs to 20 outstanding singer-songwriters per cluster. Next stops will be in Davao on July 21 to 25, Bacolod on September 23 to 26 and in Dagupan on November 18 to 22.

Participants will have the unique experience of learning from some of the country’s renowned songwriters including Noel Cabangon, Jim Paredes, Jonathan Manalo, Tina Dumlao, Marvin Querido, Trina Belamide, Jungee Marcelo, Paulo and Miguel Guico and Lara Maigue among others.

Smart is once again supporting this year's PhilPop. Smart has been empowering music fans through the years by providing the voting platform for PhilPop contestants. Since music is one passion Smart advocates with campaigns such as Smart Music Live, PhilPop is one of the many ways Smart champions the OPM cause.

Since it was launched in 2012, PhilPop has helped revive interest and pride in Filipino music by giving a nationwide platform for talented songwriters to showcase their original compositions. Winners receive cash prizes, including P1 million for the grand champion. Last year’s top prize winner was Davao’s Chud Festejo. He won for his song ‘Nanay, Tatay’, which also bagged the Maynilad Best Music Video Award.

the vowels they orbit proves longevity at Spotify Philippines' Viral 50

After less than a month of charting in the upper reaches of the Spotify Philippines' Viral 50, Filipino alt-rock outfit the vowels they orbit has finally reached the second spot of the streaming chart through their latest song "Selos." The irresistible earworm vaults from #4 to #2 this week.

Taken into account its viral appeal, the vowels they orbit's debut single joins the company of Lil Nas and Billy Cyrus' "Old Town Road" and Allmo$t's "Dalagang Pilipina" as one of the most popular songs in the country, as per Spotify Philippines' latest tracking.
Unassuming Earnestness
"Selos" started gaining traction after the band performed the song at iWant ASAP Highlights this month. With its relatable lyrics, melodic pop appeal and lighthearted jazzy chords, it's easy to see why the band continues to shred listeners' hearts into pieces without resorting to overwrought sentimentality.
Produced by Rye Sarmiento and composed by Darwin Hernandez, the vowels they orbit's maiden release was recorded at the Backdoor Studio. The song talks about "one-sided jealousy," putting into light a normal situation that one goes through in a romantic relationship.
What's next for the vowels they orbit
Now signed to Sony Music Philippines, the vowels they orbit are set to release an EP soon. The band, composed of Nikka Melchor (Vocals), Jeremy Sayas (Drums), Hannah Dela Cruz (Keyboard), Gene Santiago (Guitars) and Patch Javier (Bass), is currently being managed by Soupstar Entertainment, which takes pride of its star-studded roster such as Sandwich, Pedicab, Moonstar88, 6cyclemind, Gracenote, Imago and more.
"Selos" is now available on streaming and download platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes store, and Deezer via Sony Music Philippines.

Filipina Rapper Alex Bruce Drops New Single "Pull It Off"

After racking up more than a million views on Youtube for her live performance of "Mind As A Weapon," twelve-year-old hip-hop prodigy, Alex Bruce returns with a take-no-prisoners jam that's built on the strength of her talent and personality.

"Pull It Off," the first official single under Sony Music Philippines, continues the Batangas-based rapper's streak of empowering hip-hop anthems.

Sure, it lives up to the charismatic appeal of "Dopest," the trap-influenced demo released four months ahead of her debut. But this time, we hear a convincing introduction of a future star confidently rapping about not needing other people's approval, delivering her verses with both fire and excitement.

Given music history's lack of coverage on the contributions of Filipina artists in hip-hop, it's quite interesting how someone so young like Alex Bruce was able to champion an unrelenting brand of self-expression that puts authenticity at the forefront of her lyrics, reminding us of a younger Ruby Ibarra or Cardi B minus the vulgarities.
With Jim Poblete at the helm of the production, turning Alex Bruce's sharpened skills into a star-making showcase that's beyond theatrical, expect nothing less of "Pull It Off." It's a song that will surely end your summer on a high note.
"Pull If Off" is now available on streaming and download platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes store, and Deezer via Sony Music Philippines.

Ben & Ben on their debut album, Limasawa Street, album tour

Known for their hit singles "Kathang Isip," "Ride Home," and "Maybe The Night," Ben&Ben has been a vital force in the local music scene, charting their own path with anthemic, folk-infused pop that brims with elegance.

Without releasing a proper full-length album since 2019, the nine-piece act has amassed more than 300 million streams on Spotify and Youtube combined, and headlined concerts and festivals here and abroad. Formerly known as The Benjamins, the indie-folk outfit has achieved critical and commercial success in less than 3 years -- a proof that they're in for the long run.

And for this year, the band is ready to take their journey to the next level with the release of their debut album, Limasawa Street. Derived from "Masawa" which is a Butuanon word for light, the 13-track opus embraces the beauty of finding luminescence in darkness. "We wanted the album to represent a place of light by singing about hopeful perspectives in troubled situations," lead singer and guitarist Paolo Guico shares. It's also the name of a street that holds a special place in one of the members' heart, grounded with a deeply personal story that offers the comforts of life and home.

Most of the songs in the album were written in a relatively narrow time frame. Despite their hectic schedules, Paolo and Miguel Guico spent significant hours in the studio writing songs for the album. The rest of the band, on the other hand, had to record their parts individually for all thirteen songs. It took Ben&Ben three months to finish the recording, on top of juggling live shows and concerts in between.

Hard work eventually paid off, resulting into an eclectic collection of anthems that challenged their creative process. "Limasawa Street really stretched and explored our limits, in terms of both songwriting and arranging," Paolo Guico reflects. "During our arranging retreat, we tackled each song with a very particular mindset, but not necessarily a clear cut direction. There was a lot of sharing of different musical and technical influences, which resulted in arrangements that were all so different from each other, but all still cohesively and distinctly Ben&Ben." This level of commitment manages to break sonic and lyrical barriers, exploring various music styles from world music to '60s soul, jazz to choral music, and employing afro-latin breaks, indigenous stylings, rock arrangements, and other eclectic elements to their brand of radio-friendly folk-pop tunes.

With Limasawa Street out this month, Ben&Ben takes control of their destiny with an album that stretches music-making to exciting, entirely new places.

Get a copy of Limasawa Street on their upcoming tour dates: June 9 at Centrio Mall, June 15 at Ayala Malls Capitol Central, June 22 at Ayala Malls Legazpi, June 23 at The District Imus, June 29 at Ayala Center Cebu, July 13 at Alabang Town Center, June 20 at Ayala Malls Circuit, June 27 at Ayala Malls Solenad, August 9 at TriNoma and August 17 at Abreeza.

Singer/songwriter Daya on her latest hit Insomnia

GRAMMY Award-winning multi-platinum singer/songwriter DAYA unveils the music video for her latest hit “Insomnia” via Interscope records. The video throws viewers into rave culture with an epic party; but while everyone is dancing in the club, Daya is alone in a darkly-lit room, unable to join the party as her thoughts stay focused singularly on missing the one she loves. The video, directed by Nick Harwood, can be seen today in iconic Times Square in New York City with the support of MTV. Watch the video here to get lost in the party and emotions of “Insomnia.”

“‘Insomnia’ at its core is a gritty club-pop anthem about missing the person you love, so it felt appropriate to take the visuals in a rave direction in a grimy abandoned warehouse that feels like something you’d stumble into at 3am in Berlin to temporarily neglect whatever pain you’re feeling,” Daya says of the track’s stunning visual. “Nick Harwood took this vision and perfectly brought it to life by adding intense strobe lighting and other atmospheric elements to capture these flickering moments of desperation and loneliness, even amidst a seemingly lively, crowded setting.”

“Insomnia” – available everywhere now – has been added to Spotify’s #1 playlist globally, Today’s Top Hits (22.8M Followers)! Daya has moved up to the #1 slot on Pop Rising (1.5M Followers) this week. “Insomnia” has also been added to The A-List: Pop on Apple, which is currently the 2nd most popular Pop playlist on Apple, and the 6th most popular playlist overall. The single has garnered praise from numerous press outlets such as Billboard, PAPER Magazine, & Idolator. Idolator names the song “her catchiest single to date” and describes it as an “explosive electro-pop anthem.” Billboard calls the track a “shuddering pop production.”

“Insomnia,” laced with a hypnotic beat behind Daya’s trademark vocals, was written by Daya, Oscar Görres, J Kash and Michael Pollack and produced by Görres.

The Ransom Collective's new single, I Don't Care reached #1 on iTunes

IMG_9184-2.jpg

mustard music proudly presents “I Don’t Care” the newest single from indie/folk-pop band The Ransom Collective.

Since releasing their debut album “Traces” in 2017, the band has undergone a creative rebirth — exploring new musical ideas, and experimenting between different styles and sounds that have led them to a fresh, modern reinvention on the sound listeners and fans have come to love them for.

“I Don’t Care” brings these ideas into fruition, as the first of many songs that came to be in this new era of The Ransom Collective. The song is about discovering oneself, and all the ugliness and beauty that comes with the process.

trc.jpg

Prior to its release, the song took the top spot on the iTunes PH New Music Pre-Order Chart - proving even more successful as the single launched on May 3rd. Aside from topping the iTunes PH Alternative Chart, the head-bopping track also entered the iTunes PH All-genre chart, taking the highest spot for an OPM song. The band's comeback song joins the big leagues of Taylor Swift & Brendon Urie, BTS, and BLACKPINK, who similarly have released new tracks for their longtime fans.
TRC IDC.png

Talking about the song, lead vocalist Kian Ransom says, “I watched someone I love go through depression, and this song is essentially about the journey they went through and the empathy that’s required to understand someone who’s going through something so difficult.”

While the song tackles rather serious matters, its backing track provides a sense of fun and lightness - giving an upbeat, retro feel that will give listeners good vibes to sing and dance along to on repeat.

Coming into this brand new take on the TRC sound, band members mention Anderson Paak, Honne, Boy Pablo, Bon Iver, Prep, Crumb, Chance the Rapper, among many artists they’ve taken inspiration from.

If this song is any indication, long-time fans and new listeners have a lot of good music to look forward to from The Ransom Collective all-year round.

I Don't Care is now available for streaming on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music, under mustard music. Watch out for its accompanying music video, premiering on MYX and YouTube on May 4th.
